Ants in the house are the scourge of many folk in summertime leaving many people to fear the summer and the annual flying ants invasion which they realise the summer will bring
Only the unluck people who have suffered it will appreciate the true nature of flying ants in their homes.
Having an infestation of basic wingless ants is bad enough but when they enter their yearly mating phase the situation can become unthinkable.
Ants will form colonies in the sub-floor areas and in the wall cavities of our buildings and these colonies will continue for many years if left untreated and become progressively more persistent every year.
Our dwellings are warm and dry and provide the ideal places for a thriving ant colony; even solid asphalt floor is not a barrier to and ant colony.
Our home heating systems raises their metabolism even in the colder months when they are not active outdoors and my earliest ant job was on my birthday, which is in January!
Ants prefer a sandy soil and there are plenty areas in Lancashire, Cheshire and Manchester which produce more ant infestations than most others, Southport, Blackpool, Bolton, Sale & Altrincham come to mind as regular ant properties.
Unfortunately it is during their mating phase that they are most irksome. Here in Lancashire, Cheshire and Manchester this often is pretty often around the middle of July.
Ants mate on the wing and around mid-summer the colony releases flying immature Queens and winged males which in nature would fly off and mate in the air. Many thousands of these flying ants are produced per colony and nests tend to synchronise their production so that they mate with ants from neighbouring.
Normally this process starts after a few of days of hot, dry weather and will typically continue for about a week or so although smaller releases will extend throughout most of June, July & August.
Unfortunately when the colony is under the floor of the dwelling the results can be dreadful, literally thousands of flying are produced into the lower rooms, aiming for windows as they head for the light.
This can be very distressing for some people leading to severe emotional upset to the level that people learn to dread the summertime and have actually left their house to escape the plague of ants which they know will inevitably appear each summer.
The colder summers of the last three years has meant that ant problems were reduced on earlier but ants appear to have a way of catching up and 2010 might be a particularly good year for them.
Many people who have this problem try for DIY solutions with potions from local stores etc but mostly these efforts are doomed to failure as they are not getting to the heart of the infestation which is the colony itself, tucked safely in the cavity wall or sub-floor area.
Luckily for a lot of people the solution is at hand.
At Harrier Pest Control and Prevention (subject to satisfactory site) we are able to solve this problem and give an extendable 3 year guarantee.
The treatment which is done mostly from the exterior of the home, is totally safe for animals and children and leaves no smell, involves drilling little holes into the cavity walls of the house, not unlike a damp-proof course injection and blowing a long lasting insecticide into the cavity wall under pressure.
This forms an impenetrable barrier across which the ants cannot go and together with a precautionary internal spray treatment (if deemed necessary) will gradually bring the problem under control.
The holes, which are only 8mm in diameter remain open so it is an easy matter of topping up the wall cavities every three years to extend the life of the guarantee in three year terms.
This treatment is best done out in the early spring however it can be done at any time of year.
As a very limited time offer before our busy period begins we are offering 25 percent off the normalstandard cost until May 30 2010. Whilst we normally cover the whole of Lancashire, Cheshire and Greater Manchester, we are willing to travel further afield but this will be reflected in the cost.
